Legend of Palani Temple

In ancient Tamil devotional texts, According to Hindu mythology,

Sage Narada once visited Shiva’s celestial court at Mount Kailash with a special fruit containing the elixir of wisdom.

Shiva wanted to share it between his two sons, Ganesha and Murugan, but Sage Narada suggested a challenge: the first one who circled the world thrice would receive the fruit.

Murugan, riding his peacock, embarked on the journey. Meanwhile, Ganesha, realizing the world was symbolically represented by his parents, Shiva and Shakti, circled them. Impressed, Shiva awarded the fruit to Ganesha.

Murugan returned to find his efforts in vain and, angered, left Kailash. He chose to reside in the Palani hills in South India, seeking maturity.

Murugan lived as a hermit, discarding his ornaments, and entered meditation to discover more about himself.
